Gatura Kamante

Kamante was the houseboy in Isak Denisen's Out of Africa. Later he also worked for photographer Peter Beard and they put out a book together. Coincidently he used the same technique as Joseph Yoakum; colored pencil and crayon polished with tissue to achieve a lustrous muted surface. Kamante's drawings are about the food chain in the veldt in Kenya. All of his people and animals are involved in survival and ceremony. He is a great narrative artist.

What is the connection between Kamante Gatura and Kivuthi Mbuno, who has a very similar style, and seems much better known in East Africa, although I assume he would have started much later as an artist? Who was influenced by who? If Kamante came first why don't any of the art references mention him?
