Kumano Kurouemon

Known as the Bear of Echizen for his violently fired oversized pottery, Kumano is as close to what we call 'outsider' art in the highly process oriented world of Japanese Woodfired ceramics.
In looking at pictures of his home and kiln I noticed that he painted calligraphy on doors and walls, such as one apologizing to his postman for having to traipse through so much snow to reach his mailbox. I was thrilled to be able to get a couple of his calligraphic ventures on paper. They truly represent his outsized and bold artistic vision.
